The event began with a parade of the participating teams, followed by the performance of the National Anthem.
During the ceremony, Samir Huseynov, Advisor to the President of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation (ABF), spoke about the significant achievements achieved in Azerbaijani boxing in recent years. He emphasized that 19-year-old Subhan Mammadov made history by winning the world championship title and noted that this championship marks the beginning of the selection phase for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympic Games. The main goal is to form a strong national team and continue Azerbaijan’s success in the international boxing arena.
S. Huseynov also touched upon the work carried out in the field of boxing infrastructure, noting that serious steps will be taken in the regions — especially in the cities of Ganja and Nakhchivan.
The championship supervisor, Sid Ali Mokretari (Algeria), thanked the ABF for the invitation and stated that they would do their best to ensure the competition is conducted at a high and fair level.
After the ceremony, the Azerbaijan Championship was officially declared open.
The championship, held at the Boxing Center, brings together 166 boxers from 33 teams representing various cities, districts, and sports societies across the country. Boxers representing the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Sports Organizations Association (AHİİTA) are also participating in the tournament.
The bouts are officiated by both local judges and international referees.
The names of the championship winners will be announced on January 28.
Good luck to all participants!
